The Difficulties in Translating Indonesia Language into English
Sunday, December 19, 2010
Translation is an effort to translate something written or spoken into a different language. Students of English Department of a University will get learning about Translation in their fourth and fifth semesters. This lesson is very important to help students either how to translate English writing into Indonesia language or how to translate Indonesia language into English as they will really need it to compose their thesis. As the matter of fact, not all students canwrite their English thesis easily this far. This problem is probably caused of the following difficulties which generally found in translating Indonesia languaga into English.
The first difficulty states that most of students have no English vocabulary, but less. In thesis writing, students are expected to be able to organize words in senteces or paragraphs. Less in memorizing vocabularies will make students feel difficult to develop their idea in English. As the result, they will depend on any English dictionaries which possibly can drive them to use inappropiate words. Furthermore, those inappropiate words will obviously break the message they want to convey in their thesis.
In the second place, students' inability in arranging senbtences grammatically still becomes the main problem when they want to write an English thesis. Their lack of grammar knowledge will disturb their smoothness in writing English thesis perfectly. In line with Vocabulary problem, inappropiate grammar usage will also break the content of their thesis. For example, if a student wants to make a sentence about daily activity, one has to use simple present tense. Conversely, if one uses another tense for that sentence, it will certainly change the meaning of the sentence.
Last but not least is the fact that English is not our mother tongue. We are not Australian who speak English in their daily life nor Malaysian who who have used English as their second language. We are Indonesian who use English as the third language after using Indonesia language and our mother tongue in which it is different between one region and another. Therefore, no wonder if there are many students can't take the English style to their their writing yet. They still hold 'word by word translation' that indirectly omits the essential of English writing.
Those three difficulties are generally found in translating Indonesia language into English. For English students of a university, those are very serious problems which can influence their smoothness in arranging English. However, the most important thing to be noticed is not the difficulties but the way to solve those problems. Trying to write in English and read English texts a lot are the best answer to make us accustomed to the English writing atyle so that we can make the perfect English translation easily.

Learning Grammar Easily
No language can exist without grammar and no one can use a language without knowledge of its grammar. This statement indicates the important position of grammar in language, especially English. Based on this fact, we have to ensure that grammar is the basic rule to organize construction in a language. We will need grammar for both English speech and English formal writing. Therefore, we have to master knowledge of grammar with the following strategies.
In the first place, we can make a note of grammar point we want to learn. It should be a small note in order to make us easy to bring it everywhere. For example, we can read the note while waiting for a bus at the bus stop. To achieve this, we can both read and memorize the grammar easily whenever and wherever we are.
In the second place, we can organize a small study group to discuss about grammar. As we know that it is not enough to learn grammar only from book. Normally, there are some explanations on the book which we do not understand. For example, the difficult of using tenses that need deeply comprehension to apply it in making a correct sentence. Consequently, we can share and discuss this difficulty in group to find the right answer.
Last but not least, we have to try to learn grammar by doing grammar exercises regularly. Proverb says that practice is better than just a theory. So, we have to understand grammar by doing exercises intensively. Slowly but sure, it will improve our comprehension of grammar.
Those three are the examples of some effective ways we can practice to master grammar easily. By mastering English grammar, our English will improve because grammar is set of the logical and structural rules that govern the composition of sentences, phrases, and words in English. Thus, using grammar will determine whether our English is formally acceptable or not.
